Significant Events …
Ø 1963 Through the Foster Grandparents Program, the concept of intergenerational programming is introduced.
Ø 1966 The Plymouth Senior Center is dedicated and opened to serve the needs of seniors – it is the first federally funded, multi-purpose senior center under the Older American’s Act in the State of Wisconsin!
Ø 1976 The first aging education program is implemented into the curriculum for grades K-12.
Ø 1982 Here We Grow Child Care is opened in Plymouth and is licensed by the State of Wisconsin.
The Plymouth Senior Center moves to a new location at Valley View Medical Center/Valley Manor campus, along with the Sheboygan County Meal Site Program (which had been at a separate location at the Fairgrounds in Plymouth). They now join together to provide a seamless program for Food and Fellowship as well as the Senior Center activities.
Ø 1985 The Intergenerational Education Volunteer Network Act of 1985 is introduced into the 99th Congress.
Ø 1992 The Plymouth Every Child Coordinating Council is established to bring together more than 100 representatives to collaborate on behalf of children and families.
Ø 1993 Here We Grow becomes accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and is the first group child care center in Sheboygan County to achieve this certification.
Here We Grow Child Care is expanded into the city of Sheboygan.
Ø 1996 The Family Resource Center is incorporated in Plymouth under the direction of the Plymouth Every Child Coordinating Council. The Center opens in February of 1997.
Ø 1997 Here We Grow opens its third location in the Sheboygan Job Center Building.
Intergenerational Programming begins at the Plymouth Senior Center.
Ø 1998 Here We Grow – Sheboygan receives accreditation by the NAEYC.
Ø 1999 Marsha Vollbrecht, the Board Chair of the current Plymouth Intergenerational Coalition, introduces the idea of a partnership to meet the growing needs of the Senior Center and Here We Grow Child Care Center. The partnership is proposed to Aurora Health Care Central Region President to bring together Here We Grow, the City of Plymouth (Senior Center) and Valley Manor/Valley View (Aurora) to build an intergenerational building on the Valley View campus that will meet the needs of seniors and of the community for child care.
Ø 2000 The Family Resource Center expands into Sheboygan.
A site plan is completed to determine if a building to meet these needs would fit on the land site at the Valley View Campus – the plan indicates that it will fit! The partners begin developing the concept and gathering information.
Ø 2001 A formal Board of Directors is established. The Plymouth Intergenerational Coalition, Ltd. is incorporated as a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization.
Ø 2002 Here We Grow Child Care starts a wrap-around collaboration with Head Start in Sheboygan.
A feasibility study is completed by PACE Architects through grants from the Aurora Health Foundation and the City of Plymouth.
Aurora Health Care donates land for development of the Plymouth Intergenerational Center.
Ø 2003 Community focus groups/business leader interviews give direction to PIC for researching possible sites.
Ø 2004 PIC receives a Department of Commerce Planning Grant to executive site research.
A $100,000 donation is received from an anonymous donor to further the vision.
Ø 2005 The Plymouth United Way Board pledges a $150,000 grant for building construction.
An offer to purchase the land is accepted.
Ø 2006 The Plymouth Senior Center is awarded accreditation by the Wisconsin Association of Senior Centers (only 20 senior centers in Wisconsin share this honor.)
