Sheboygan County Head Start is a federally funded grant program for families meeting the federal guidelines for poverty. Head Start is a “family development” program offering many services, including:
A kindergarten readiness, developmentally appropriate preschool for three and four year old children
Developmental screening for all children
Hearing and vision screening for all children
Fluoride varnish application three times per year
Ensuring yearly physical and dental exams are completed for each child
Starting the referral process when problems are identified
Serving nutritious breakfasts, lunches, and snacks
Working with the families to:
Identify family strengths
Identify family needs
Help them develop family goals
Identify community resources
Provide parenting information
Head Start has been helping families in the community for forty-two years. It is unfortunate that all the eligible families cannot receive Head Start services. In the 2007/2008 school year there were seventy income eligible children on the waiting list who never received services; each year those numbers continue to increase.
Sheboygan County Head Start is excited to be a part of the Plymouth Intergenerational Center. A facility such as this will provide programming where young children and senior citizens can interact. The Head Start children, being the highest risk children in the community, need these types of role models. The Family Resource Center being on-site will provide many additional resources and opportunities for the Head Start families. And finally having a child care center in the same building as Head Start will provide an opportunity for collaborating to meet the needs of working families; eliminating transportation worries. Bringing resources and generations together under one roof will be of great benefit to our Head Start families.
