Background …
What are Intergenerational Programs?
The National Council of Aging defines intergenerational programs as activities that increase cooperation and exchange between any two age groups.
Intergenerational programs are designed to resolve and prevent the negative feelings between the ages by providing an ideal environment for the development and emotional well being of all age groups.
Intergenerational programs create the potential for a variety of successful interventions using the talents and expertise of professionals working at both ends of the life cycle. The fact is that a healthy, mutually-beneficial interaction occurs between young and old participants in intergenerational programs.
In an effort to close the generation gap, many intergenerational programs that include older people from 60 to 100 years of age, and younger people ranging from several months to 22 years, are being developed in a variety of settings, such as schools, senior citizen centers, nursing homes, churches/synagogues, centers for children with special needs, and universities.
Who is the Plymouth Intergenerational Coalition?
The Plymouth Intergenerational Coalition (PIC) was formed as a 501(c)(3) non-profit, charitable organization to explore the idea of combining child care and senior facilities in order to realize the benefits of intergenerational experiences, shared facility resources, expanded social services, and increased community involvement.
It has developed into a unique, “grassroots,” public – private partnership of organizations and individuals centered around the mission of developing an intergenerational center to serve the Plymouth/Sheboygan area. This will include a Senior Center, a Child Care Center, and a Family Resource Center.
